Kylie's Metrosource Magazine Interview

From Metrosource Magazine:

Each year, choosing our list of People We Love is a challenge.

Over the course of 2012, so many people raised eyebrows, made headlines and won awards or elections or Olympic medals. Topping the list is a gay icon celebrating a very special anniversary.

Many Americans know Kylie Minogue primarily for her massive hits like “Loco-motion” or “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” But to her gay fans and on the international stage, Minogue is a superstar of the highest order. Her style — in terms of both fashion and music — is famously forward-thinking, and this year her boundary-pushing career turns 25.

Her celebration, K25, has encompassed special live performances, a role in the critically acclaimed film Holy Motors and an album called The Abbey Road Sessions, on which she drastically re-imagines some of her greatest hits. As dance tracks turn into sultry torch songs, it proves once again that Kylie Minogue is a master of transformation.

“I don’t pretend to be a chameleon; I am,” Kylie tells me when we meet to discuss this year of celebration. “Even if I did not have this job, I don’t think I’d show up for work looking the same every day.” Minogue’s ever-evolving look and unique blend of glitz and glamour have helped draw gay fans to her throughout the years.

“It wasn’t like I came from somewhere gay people were this exotic breed,” Minogue says; she’d worked alongside gay people from her early days in television. Still, she could never have anticipated how eager and loyal our community would be to her. “It’s been like a big hug,” she says. “There were no questions asked as to [whether or not I was] part of the team.”

As for what the next 25 years will bring, Minogue says, “I could not have predicted the last year or the last five years. All I know is that none of us know what’s around the corner. And I think I’ll take whatever is thrown my way — good, bad or ugly — and try to make the most out of it.”
